Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack on Kyiv after Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said he plans to meet his US counterpart Donald Trump in Florida Sunday, as efforts continue to end the nearly four-year war in Eastern Europe.

Zelensky cautioned on Friday that he could not say whether the meeting would lead to a firm agreement, but said the two sides would aim to “finalize as much as we can.” Earlier on Friday, the Ukrainian leader had struck an optimistic note, writing on X that “a lot can be decided before the New Year.”

Zelensky told reporters that the 20-point peace plan hammered out by Ukrainian and US officials is “90% ready” and that he planned to discuss with Trump how Ukraine’s allies could guarantee its security in the future.

Trump said in an interview with Politico that he expects the meeting to “go good,” but cautioned that Zelensky “doesn’t have anything until I approve it.” He added that he also expects to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin “soon, as much as I want.”

Less than 24 hours later, Russia launched a massive aerial attack on Kyiv which injured at least eight people, city officials said.
